In 2016 EFDC's Town & Village Centre Opportunities Funds were opened to a wider audience for bids. BHRS successfully won a modest bid to encourage interest in some of our local businesses alongside providing learning opportunities for children in Buckhurst Hill. The bid relied on money being match funded by 18 of the businesses in Queen's Road who have all generously committed their time to help our local primary schools.
Children will be interviewing businesses about their work, sales, equipment and time. Their challenge alongside the mathematical learning opportunities and social skills used is to create an advert for the businesses they investigate. The final task is for the children to make and cost a product to sell in Queen's Road outside the shops they have adopted.
St John's have taken on this activity with great enthusiasm and the children from year 4 are all set to start by locating the businesses involved using maps and photographs. They are also studying 'persuasive writing' to develop their knowledge of the language of advertising!
St John's Market Day in Queens's Road
In the afternoon of 16th June Queens Road held a buzzing market filled with the stalls created by the children from St John’s, supported by their fantastic staff, parent helpers and BHRS volunteers. The stalls were hosted by the businesses the children have very much adopted. What a lovely community we have in Buckhurst Hill.
Last week the children interviewed the businesses about their work, sales, equipment and time. They had certainly prepared some interesting questions! Back at school they took on the challenge to both create advertising for the shop they had worked with but also to produce products to sell! And did they sell? Indeed they did on Friday, raising over £700 in profits for charity!
The event has proved to be such fun for all as well as a really great way of learning. BHRS has been asked to work with the school to organise this again next year! Having heard so many positive comments from businesses, shoppers, parents, teachers and children what more could be said other than - Look forward to seeing the young businesses again in 2018!

We're very much hoping that other schools will want to join in the activity later in the year.
