BHRS Photography Competition 2021, by Margaret Drew

This year the title for the competition was “My Favourite Place in Buckhurst Hill”, chosen to cheer us all after the time we’ve all had unable to go out as freely as usual.

All the entries were super and our judge, Roger Taylor, very much enjoyed the challenge of selecting three he felt displayed a certain something that made them just that extra special.

Finding a judge can be a challenge but this year with this very specific title about our home town made it much easier as we knew the right person had to be someone who loved Buckhurst Hill too.

Roger has lived in Buckhurst Hill for 50 years; 40 in the same house, where he has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and photographic re-toucher. I knew about his graphic expertise from his design of the Christmas posters he had undertaken each year for the Society’s joint Christmas Fair with the Parish Council.

He told me that, “In ‘the old days’, these tasks were all done by hand. Computers changed the way everybody works, especially graphic designers. Retouching pictures has become easier, but clients still demand the impossible. Years ago, I was the official photograph re-toucher for HRH Prince Charles. He gave out signed pictures whilst on world tours.

Over the years, I have produced logos and typefaces for numerous global companies, including BA, Rolls Royce, Barclays, Post Office, Tate Gallery, Roche, HSBC, Lloyds, Waitrose, Savoy Hotels, The White House, Washington, to name but a few. Focus now also includes smaller start-up companies, all seeking an eye catching app.

I am looking forward to judging the submitted photographs for BHRS, having been a member for at least 25 years”.

I was delighted that he agreed to join us as a marvellous judge!

Roger was of course not given the name of any entrant and all the photographs were laid out for him to look at without their titles or photographer's name.

First Prize - Janet Caddock

Every aspect about Buckhurst Hill we all love – the outdoors, family, wildlife – but done in this photograph with a great balance – ‘Golden Section’ – and the bird as the eye catching point.

Second prize - Sarah Boland

Lovely effect of the reflection. Magical colours.

Third prize - Jenn Page

Strong from all the parallel lines in the image.

Roger found third prize very difficult to select and so we also have three ‘Highly Commended' Photographs by Margaret Sinfield, Amanda Waters and Julie Allen.

Thank you very much to the shops in Queen's Road who have joined in this event with BHRS by displaying the photographs in their windows for two weeks. This includes Society members – Coco Hair Salon, 16 Queens Florist, Il Vino and Naturally Dog as well as GD Cabinet Makers, Supadance, Fentons, Mathnesium, and Pure.
